From 1900-1941, early risers in Britain and Ireland often relied on a knocker-up to get to work on time. Alarm clocks were still uncommon, so a knocker-up would be paid a few pence a week to bang on doors or rap on upper windows with a long pole, not leaving until the door or window opened.
