- We recently lost the legendary fashion and fine art photographer Deborah Turbeville, so it seemed a good time to revisit her beautiful and atmospheric work — but with something a little different. These photographs by her are of the Ostankino Palace in Russia, a private theatre with a romantic history. It was built in the late 18th century by czarist count Nikolai Sheremetev for Praskovia Kovalyova, who, legend says, he fell utterly in love with after seeing her leading a cow home from pasture. The Ostankino Palace was created as a showcase for Kovalyova, who was also a gifted opera singer and ballet dancer — here she performed with a 200 member serf troupe for the count and his guests.
