Atelier: The Illustrated Villa
  • Today I'm admiring the extraordinary seaside Villa Santo Sospir, located in Saint-Jean Cap-Ferrat in the south of France and lavishly decorated by the artist/poet/filmmaker Jean Cocteau. After meeting the villa's owner Francine Weisweiller (who became his muse) and viewing her home, Cocteau thought the walls were too white, and in 1950 he decided to draw on the walls with charcoal, working around the furniture, which was left in situ. Eventually he both drew and painted on all the walls, the ceilings, some of the furniture, created a wallpaper for the dining room and installed two mosaics as well. Amazing.
