Built in 1700 in Algaida, in the heart of Majorca, this country building was an inn, a warehouse and an oil mill before being abandoned completely. But when architect Durval Dias Junior discovered it, he was fascinated by its possibilities despite its ruinous state, deciding to make it his country retreat. Determined to respect his new home's origins, Durval sourced the sandstone for the walls and window arches locally, and re-used materials from other parts of the house when possible, such as making interior doors from old wooden beams. When it came to the decor, Durval wanted it to be in keeping with the elegantly austere architecture, reflecting the airy and simple style of the traditional village houses.
