- Living in a space designed by a famous architect can be a little intimidating, but Caroline and Michael Joy and their two small sons Johan and Alberte are more than comfortable celebrating Christmas. Their Danish home is one of the Charlottenlund houses designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1929, beautifully situated on the edge of a park where the family enjoys walks in the nearby woods, gathering pine cones and branches to use in decorating their home. Not surprisingly, Arne Jacobsen's aesthetic has influenced their decor — their home is furnished in a monochromatic palette, which goes well with the minimalist architecture — but they don't mind ignoring Jacobsen's dislike of decoration of any kind, cheerfully adding spruce branches and other seasonal green notes throughout the house. But as much as they enjoy getting their space ready for the holidays, for them, Christmas is about an atmosphere of warmth — a time to continue holiday traditions with the children and to enjoy good food in the company of family and friends.
