Love of Words Brings a Child and a Poet Together
Read this and feel instantly better about everything. Utterly sweet, inspiring and wonderful (and, it's about Billy Collins — one of my absolute fave poets — too).
    Happy Birthday Ennio Morricone!
Yesterday the distinguished Italian composer turned 82 — have a look at some highlights of his music for films over at Criterion. His beautifully operatic work for the classic spaghetti western Once Upon a Time in the West still stands as one of the best film scores ever composed.
    The Art of Fashion
London's Design Museum currently has a great exhibition on the history of fashion illustration — wish I could see this! The link takes you to a slideshow preview on the BBC site — go here for info about the show. Via bricolage (thanks!)
40 Things You Didn't Know About Tina Fey
Fun facts about the lovely and brilliant Tina Fey, who received the 13th-annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts awards on Tuesday. Congrats!
    The English Ghost
Jonathan Barnes of the TLS has a wonderful review of Peter Ackroyd's new book The English Ghost, which gathers together almost a hundred testimonies (ranging over several centuries) from those who claim to have witnessed the unexplainable. Scholarly and carefully detached in its approach, it nonetheless makes for some seriously spooky autumn evening reading.
Laura Tarrish's Collection of Miniature Chairs
Collage illustrator Laura Tarrish talks about her wonderful collection of miniature chairs. Great slideshow! Via Design Observer.
    Supermodels for Solar Power
Model Elettra Wiedemann started the nonprofit One Fricken Day in partnership with the Solar Electric Light Fund (a GOOD 100 organization) to provide clinics in Rwanda, Haiti, and other places with solar power. Now that's beautiful.
    Leek and Potato Soup
The chilly weather we've had here lately makes me crave simple comfort foods like this classic soup, based on a recipe from Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Vol. I by Julia Child. Via Saveur.
