What was once an old photo studio has been converted by interior designer Flora Gastines into a compact but very liveable loft space — even though it's just 45 square metres. The mezzanine, supported by metal beams, allowed Flora to install a bedroom and bathroom — and gives these rooms privacy away from the main living area below. The kitchen has been tucked underneath, and is designed to disappear behind a smooth white facade that blends into the white walls — the bottom cupboards hide the refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine and oven, while the top cupboards are used for the pantry and dish storage. In the main living area, a brown shag carpet defines the seating area, furnished with two orange plastic chairs (originally designed in 1974 by Ole Knudsen), and a classic rocking chair by Charles and Ray Eames. The slim metal spiral staircase nearby was painted white to blend into the background. Upstairs, the bedroom has a curtain that can be drawn for more privacy at night, while a dressing room tucked in to the left of the stairs provides storage for clothing. Compact as the loft is, its efficient storage and extensive use of white make it feel much roomier and open — an excellent lesson in smart interior design. More (in French) here.
