- Born and raised in Visby on Gotland, graphic designer Henrik Nygren dreamed of having a holiday home for his own family there one day. So, when glass artist Göran Wärff, a summer resident in Visby, called Henrik in 1998 about a small office building for sale near the port, Henrik and his wife, Canadian-born creative director Susanna Nygren Barrett, snapped it up immediately. The building itself was in dire shape, so the first summer was spent rebuilding the entire structure. After several years there, they expanded their summer home to accommodate their growing family (they have two children — Ingrid and Elsa), creating an open floor plan designed to be both durable and simple to maintain. The colour scheme — a white interior and black exterior — looks modern but is in fact a regular feature in the Gotland building tradition. Just a few kilometers down the coast are the traditional small fishing huts in the same tones — and like their neighbors, the Nygrens tar their wooden roof every two years. More here, too.
