- Sculptor Michele Oka Done was one of the true pioneer loft dwellers, settling with her family 28 years ago in one of the then-empty massive industrial spaces of New York's old manufacturing district, south of Houston Street. Like the other artists who colonized these spaces, she was drawn to their natural sunlight and enormous space — perfect for a studio as well as being wonderful to live in. She's still there and still loves it. See more photographs of her amazing home on LoftLife.
