- Virago Modern Classics turns 30 next month! With the publication of Antonia White's book Frost in May in 1978, Virago Press launched a list that led to the rediscovery and reprinting of women writers whose work had been lost, as well as demonstrating the existence of a female tradition in literature. To mark the anniversary, eight of its most popular titles will be re-issued by Virago Press in hardcover format, with covers designed by textile designers such as Lucienne Day and Celia Birtwell, and with new introductions, too. For an excellent overview of the history of this more than worthy series, I highly recommend reading Rachel Cooke's Guardian article here.
